I’ve spent $40,000 on shoes and I have no place to live? I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes!” Carrie Bradshaw

A great pair of shoes can make or break not only your outfit, but also your day!! A pair of stilettos when running errands all day is not ideal, and thongs should be left at the beach. And just like outfits, there are many options. Styles, colors, patterns and textures…

If you stare into your shoe closet and struggle to work out what shoes you should be wearing when, then I am here to make life a little easier for us all. Below, is an easy guide of different types of shoes and when to wear them.

Heels

  • Stilettos

Every woman needs a pair of high heels. High heels can be teamed with a limitless range of clothing and will elongate those pins.

Pumps are such a timeless shape and you just can’t go wrong with a classic black, nude or leopard print – perfect to amp up any night time look. If you want to make a statement, go for something bright and you will never look back.

When and what to wear:

  • Office
  • Evening
  • On a date
  • Summer
  • Winter (be careful in the rain though!!)
  • Spring
  • Fall
  • Any length dress or skirt
  • Jeans
  • Pants

When to leave at home:

  • The gym (obviously)
  • Running errands
  • BBQ’s (or any event that involves a lot of grass…)
  • Wedges

Wedges are a fabulous alternative if you’re not a stiletto girl, but still love the benefits from that extra height and leg elongating effect of a high heel. Wedges are still uber hot and the best bit? They are comfortable!!!

Wedges are also great for women with wider/muscular calves. The thicker wedge gives an illusion of smaller calves. Sounds great huh!

Just like stilettos, wedges look fab with just about every outfit. This versatile shoe can be worn in any season and practically on any occasion. I suggest buying a couple of different pairs in neutral colors – think black, nude, white and brown.

When and what to wear:

  • Daytime
  • Office
  • Evening
  • Running errands
  • On a date
  • Any event that involves grass. Think outdoor weddings, BBQ’s etc.
  • Summer
  • Winter (be careful in the rain though!!)
  • Spring
  • Fall
  • Any length dress or skirt
  • Jeans
  • Pants

When to leave at home:

  • The gym (again, obviously)

Flats

  • Sports luxe

For a casual fall/winter day look, I always head for some type of sneaker. Not only is it perfect for a little brunch date or shopping trip, but this is exactly the type of look I would’ve sported at college – it’s chic, casual, comfortable but still a little out of the ordinary. I’m obsessed with this look at the moment.

If you still want a little extra height find something with a little hidden wedge. Or if you are like me and love your Nikes, Roshe are my go to’s. Pair them with a skinny pair of jeans or an on trend drop crutch and you are ready to hit the pavement.

When and what to wear:

  • The gym
  • Running errands
  • BBQ’s
  • Jeans
  • Drop Crutch pants
  • Daytime
  • Summer
  • Winter
  • Spring
  • Fall

When to leave at home:

  • The gym
  • Office
  • Evening
  • Dresses or skirts
  • Sandals

Sandals are more polished than thongs and less high maintenance than high heels and offer a balance between comfort and style. Although, wearing sandals does mean staying on top of your pedicure appointments. No chipped toe polish for us!!

Wear them while on spring/summer vacation and they are perfect for a casual, yet chic weekend BBQ with friends and family.

A leather, tan pair goes great with a tan, patterned shorts and a tank. If you want to add a bit of fancy to an evening BBQ, pop a pair of metallic gold or silver sandals on and you are sure to stand out.

When and what to wear:

  • Daytime
  • On a casual date
  • BBQ’s (or any event that involves a lot of grass…)
  • Running errands
  • Summer
  • Spring
  • Any length dress or skirt (maxi dresses/skirts especially)
  • Jeans
  • Pants
  • Shorts

When to leave at home:

  • The gym
  • Fall
  • Winter
  • Ballet Flats

If you ever see me running errands, more than likely I will be in my favorite black, ripped knee skinny jeans, black t-shirt and some form of flat shoe. It is my staple look, with comfort being the key. There are so many options, but who can say no to a pair of textured, leopard flats? Not only does the leopard add some interest to an all black outfit, but they are super comfortable as well.

Meetings and time spent in the office is never boring with some black ballet flats. Ballet flats are amazingly versatile, comfortable and can be worn all year round with a range of outfits!

When and what to wear:

  • Daytime
  • Office
  • Evening
  • On a date
  • Running errands
  • Summer
  • Winter (be careful in the rain though!!)
  • Spring
  • Fall
  • Any length dress or skirt
  • Jeans
  • Pants

When to leave at home:

  • The gym

Boots

  • Knee High or over the knee Boots

2015 is bringing back the knee high/over the knee boot. A sleek knee high or even over the knee boot can update your look instantly and add some unique personality to your outfit in the fall and winter seasons.

They can be worn casually over some fitted jeans or leggings for a casual day time look, or if you are wanting to add that extra bit of spice to your outfit for a night with the girls then pairing them with a little black dress is the way to do it.

The lovely ladies are have have wider calves (like me…) should be searching for a pair that has some added elastic stretch.

If you are a little shorter in height, find a pair that has a heel. This will assist in elongating the leg, making you look and feel taller.

When and what to wear:

  • Daytime
  • Office
  • Evening
  • Midi, knee length or mini dress/skirt
  • Jeans
  • Pants
  • Summer
  • Winter (be careful in the rain though!!)
  • Spring
  • Fall

When to leave at home:

  • Flared or loose pants
  • The gym (once again, obviously)
  • Summer (too hot!!)
  • Ankle boots

Black boots are an absolute staple in my wardrobe – I love that they can take me from day to night. I can never have too many ankle boots; I wear them with absolutely anything and everything. Summer, fall, winter and spring, I have my ankle boots on rotation. Flat or a chunky heel is a godsend when you’re on the go all day.

Black is my go to colour but with anything black, it’s all about textures and I’ve been loving suede this year, especially if you’re looking for a change from your typical black leather ankle boots.

When and what to wear:

  • Midi, knee length or mini dress/skirt
  • Jeans
  • Pants
  • Daytime
  • Office
  • Evening
  • The middle of summer, spring, fall and definitely winter

When to leave at home:

  • The gym
